Borghetto is a pleasant seaside resort which also prompts walks in the hills and excursions to other villages in the hinterland. The village, encircled by walls, was founded in 1288 at the behest of Albenga as a defensive outpost against Loano. It took its name from the Santo Spirito hospice founded there in the 12th century, an influential convent from a cultural point of view and the destination of many pilgrimages. A district under Albenga, Borghetto still managed to keep some independence, and in the first half of the 14th century it came under the Republic of Genoa, following its vicissitudes.
