Zuccarello

Zuccarello, dominated by the ruins of the castle of the Del Carretto Marquises, potrays a very rare case of a medieval village that has remained practically intact since its foundation and is considered one of the most beautiful villages of Italy. Founded in 1248 by the inhabitants of the valley and the marquises of Clavesana, it was fought over several times because of its strategic position in the valley of the Neva stream.

It was ceded to the Del Carretto Marquises, subsequently sold to the Savoys, confiscated by the Emperor Ferdinand II of Hapsburg, and auctioned off to Genoa. It was indeed the strategic position which made it one of the most active places in the valley; documents show that there were two mills, two oil mills, three kilns and even pasta factories as well as a variety of hotels and inns; during the Italian campaign it was one of the key places of the Napoleonic troops and it was where General Massena established his headquarters. The village is in the foothills of where the castle once stood. One must take a walk along the “carruggi” and through the porticos which almost make them the emblem of Zuccarello.

The parish church of San Bartolomeo, with its Romanesque belfry, is as old as the village itself.
