La Spezia - 5 Terre - Golfo dei Poeti

Santo Stefano was built on a branch of the Via Francigena (info: www.viafrancigena.eu ). The Via Francigena was an ancient road which led to the coast, where pilgrims could reach Santiago de Compostella from the ports of Lerici and Levanto. This road was also a crossroad for merchants, leading to the Pianura Padana or Lucca through the Passo della Cisa (Cisa Pass). Hospices, mills( for olives and grapes) and artisan workshops were located there, because of the intense religious and commercial traffic. The village is divided into two parts by the ancient Cisa Road. It is surrounded by imposing Renaissance walls. There are two gates in the walls which face the Via Francigena. The main church of Santo Stefano, which overlooks the town, is in Baroque style. There are many footpaths near Santo Stefano. Ponzano Superiore is easily reached on foot, as well as, the Magra River in the Montemarcello-Magra Park (nfo: www.parcomagra.it ). ( More Less )
